Could you please give some detailed instructions? I described and solved a similar issue here: However, after installation finished, I noticed that this issue still exists! Then, of course, I also need to change the owner and group of this folder to solve the high CPU usage by clamd. This is very bad. This means: everytime you reboot the server, you need to re-create that folder again and re-assign the owner again. Not real fix, but simple workaround. Skip to content. Why my VestaCP did not create that folder? Why you still have not solve this problem in the installing script of VestaCP?
It just disappeared after server reboot. Hope VestaCP team will solve this problem in next release. Hello, Not real fix, but simple workaround.
Fix will be in 0.
Clamscan has a fixed amount of work to do so limiting it to a certain speed means it's just going to take longer. It's going to hold the CPU in contention for longer. Allow it to run as fast as it can means you use your CPU to its fullest. Making it very "nice" means it'll let other processes do their work before its own. This means if there are lots of other busy processes, yes, it'll take a long time to do its own work but if there's nothing on there, it'll just chunk through its workload.
If you're running clamd with systemd, you could use the CPUQuota option. Ubuntu Community Ask! Sign up to join this community. The best answers are voted up and rise to the top. It looks like it still works eating a lot of cpu As long as no other process requires cputime, clamscan gets a lot of it. But as soon as another process which has a higher priority needs cputime, clamscan has no chance. Are there any tools to define a default nice value for particular applications to run with? Preferably a tool that lets you compare all of your presets side-by-side.

If you need to limit clamscanrun sudo cpulimit -e clamscan -l So I should start cpulimit at startup in rc. This would be a really neat solution if used programattically!

I remember seeing bug posts about it on the clamav website but I'm curious if anyone else has seen it or recommends any solutions. It's been going so bad that I've felt the need to disable it on some VPS's.
Used CRON to schedule a scan 1am. I notice that sites on the host stopped responding. Things like slow response to no database connection.
I checked htop and saw high resource usage. Since it was so late I decided to let it run anticipating it would be done soon enough. Come to find it still running 9am in the morning and causing sporadic outages. Looking for suggestions on a solution. Either a way to limit resource usage or an alternative to Clam AV. I'll elaborate in that this is a Cpanel server.
The thread model is hacked wordpress sites and scanning. Which makes scanning worth while I'd think. At first I realized that I had backups and Clamd scheduled at the same time.
However after changing the time I get the same result. CPanel support suggested removing the cron job. There is lots of talk about using the service instead but after reading everything I was confused even more. You've told us nothing about how you are scanning the files. That you are running a "scheduled" scan rather implies you are running clamscan or clamdscan, but you've not shown us the code you are using.
There are many, many bad ways to implement this and only a few good ones. Even with the good ones it can be rather resource heavy appropriate use of ionice and nice may help.
If you run your virus scanner on a single file, it will spend a huge amount of time and disk bandwidth loading the fingerprint data then a very short time checking the file. Switching to a different AV isn't going to solve a problem with your implementation - IME sophos is slightly than clamscan, although sophos can also be configured to run as a daemon and an agent can feed it files for checking, but the api is not published and sophos doesn't ship a client.
Also, there are very few viruses for linux and none in active circulation. There isno threat model sensibly addressedby scheduled scans. Sign up to join this community.

Either a way to limit resource usage or an alternative to Clam AV I'll elaborate in that this is a Cpanel server. Looking at htop there are several clamd processes running and it again maxes the server out. Active Oldest Votes.

What is high system resource usage?
The top program provides a dynamic real-time view of a running system. Line 3, marked in blue, shows CPU state percentages based on the interval since the last refresh. In my personal opinion, mpstat gives one the most informative outputs when troubleshooting CPU leakage.
Display three per-processor -P CPU reports for processors 0 and 1 at one second intervals:. I would describe iostat as an inferior, or perhaps, simplified version of mpstat when talking about CPU resource monitoring. Note that the first line gives averages since the last reboot.
The vmstat command reports information about many resource activities including CPU, processes, memory, paging, block IO and disks activity. Note that the first reported line gives averages since the last reboot. Default output shows memory in KB B. CPU activity is marked in blue. Time values are as per man page :.
As per man page, sar can write information the specified number of times spaced at the specified intervals in seconds. Display three real-time CPU utilisation -u reports at one second intervals:. Extract historical per-processor -P statistics for processors 0 and 1 starting -s 1 PM and ending -e 2 PM time interval:.
For example, to get CPU stats for 18th of February, we would do:. Sar is irreplaceable tool for future capacity planning.

There are three different kinds of options which can be passed to ps: UNIX. These must not be used with a dash.
GNU long options. These are preceded by two dashes. S for sleeping idle. R for running. D for disk sleep uninterruptible. T for traced or suspended e. W for paging. Note that this does not include time spent servicing hardware and software interrupts. Time values are as per man page : us : time spent running non-kernel code user time, including nice time.

Those two vps are brand new, just 1 domains added to each of the vps with no traffic at all. After clamav is installed, the ram usage has been increased dramatically. Clamav uses approximately mb on each of my vps, it's just too much for a brand new vps. Is there anyway I can optimize clamav, so that it uses less ram? Show hidden low quality content. On servers there is a limited amount of resources available for use at any one given time, for all users on that server.
The main resources that we monitor for high usage would be CPU usage, and disk usage. The processors or CPU cores on a server handle any tasks that your account sends to them, with typical tasks including running a server-side PHP script, connecting to a database, or sending email. Because there is a set number of CPU cores per server, the amount of time that your account can request processing time from the CPUs is limited on a shared hosting platform.
Once the CPU has processed the instructions for the tasks it needs to complete for your account, it typically is going to require reading or writing information to the hard drive on the server. Depending on the level of hosting that you have, either shared, VPS, or dedicated, your acceptable levels of resource usage will be different. If you encounter a resource usage related problem that is not mentioned here, please use the Your Opinion Matters! This way we can continue to expand our list and make it that much easier for the next customer that has a similar problem.

When encountering problems with high resource usage, there are several key things that you want to check to see if your problems can be resolved without having to upgrade to a more robust hosting platform. Gallery2 — Gallery2 Performance Tips. There are several online tools that can help you benchmark your website and provide some good starting points for general optimizations:. Most applications support some form of database caching either natively or via a plugin that can help cut down on duplicate database calls that can lead to excessive resource usage.
Search engines and bot activity — A lot of the time search engine crawlers, and other automated bots that are simply trying to index large portions of the Internet, could be among your highest amounts of traffic.
You can read about the robots. If you for instance have an image gallery section of your website with photos of family and friends, that you might not necessarily want the whole world to know about, you can utilize robots. This is also helpful if you have some sections of your site that could require a lot of database activity or other type of high resource usage activity. MySQL optimization — As your database gets more and more usage, over time there can be additional overhead and you might need to re-index, or re-organize your data.
The easiest and qickest way to handle this would be by optimizing the database from phpMyAdmin available from your cPanel. That way you can always revert back to a good working copy of your database in the event that something is deleted in your optimization attempts by accident. You should now hopefully have a good understanding of what high system resource usage is. If you continue to experience issues with high resource usage on your current hosting platform, you might be interested in upgrading your hosting planthat way you would have a higher resource usage limit for your account.
Recently I have noticed increased CPU usage on my reseller account and child accounts through the corresponding cpanels of each account. I recommend checking your server logs for additional clues or errors. In case any of our website starts causing server load, do you give the time for correcting the issue or just suspend the website?
In severe cases where suspension is neccesary to avoid server from overloading for other clients, do you provide some measures and help for correcting it? Everything is handled on a case by case basis. If your site is normally fine and starts encroaching or suddenly spikes up, we will notify you of the issue so you can correct it. If it is affecting the overall performance of the server, it may be subject to suspension and you will then be notified of the issue.
Of course, if it is determined the issue is from a rogue file or script, we may be able to handle that for you and then notify you. If you are asking to see the CPU usage from each site that is not possible.
Are you on a dedicated or VPS? Seems like a common problem. Seems like the way In Motion does business. Our servers are perfectly able to handle websites under normal conditions. WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, and all the other php based CMSes out there are can quickly become unruly for any hosting server. That is where optimization comes into play. This reduces usage on individual accounts and works to the advantage of all accounts on the server.
How many sites you can have is far less of an obstacle to an account than how much resources they consume. If someone set up something at their home that consumed enough electricity to harm the grid, the electric company would not allow them to do so for long.
